About Handy Cross Indoor Bowls Club

An Introduction

  • Our club was established at the old Handy Cross Sports Centre in 1975, making us the oldest indoor bowling club in Buckinghamshire.
  • We now occupy new and much improved facilities at the recently built Wycombe Leisure Centre which is still situated at the Handy Cross Hub.
  • As well as the Bowls Hall, we now have our own club room, catering facilities, good changing rooms with lockers and toilets and a disabled toilet, so we can offer a really good service to all our members and visitors
  • We are a properly constituted club, affiliated to all the appropriate national bodies with a democratically elected Commitee & Officers. This enables us to manage all the affairs of our club in-house and ensure that it is run efficiently for the benefit of its members.

Activities

  • Bowls activities take place throughout the week during the winter months from late September to early April.
  • There are a number of leagues running on weekday afternoons and evenings, organised club roll-ups on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings including a break for tea and biscuits, social roll-ups and coaching on Friday mornings and friendly inter-club matches at the weekends.
  • In addition we run a variety of club singles, pairs & team Competitions for our own members, we enter several national level competitions and we run the Handy Cross Shield competition at weekends in which local outdoor bowls clubs, with members at HXIBC,  compete for a prestigious trophy.
  • In our new premises we are able to operate in the summer as well, so the social roll-up sessions continue and we run some different in-house competitions from April to September.
  • This still leaves slots for individual practice and roll-up sessions for members, or Pay-and-Play opportunities for non-members or aspiring applicants.

Attendees

  • Our membership includes bowlers from novices to international standard and we have fully qualified coaches who are able to deal with all levels of ability and all age groups from children to pensioners.
  • By opening our bowls facility to the Partially-sighted Association, the Disabled Association, the Over 50s and the Bucks Short Mat Bowls Association we help facilitate participation in the sport of bowls by as many groups as possible.
  • We have an official child and vulnerable adults policy stating that our club is committed to promoting a safe environment in which children and vulnerable adults can enjoy taking part in the sport of bowls. The club seeks to underpin and ensure this commitment by following and promoting the joint Child Protection Policy and Procedures of the National Governing Bodies.
  • We run a book, gift and refreshment area to raise funds for items our club may wish to purchase and every year the majority of funds raised is donated to local charities.
  • Despite the fact that our club has been in existence for a long time we are definitely not stuck in the past, but are forward looking and innovative and above all we are very friendly and welcoming to new members.
  • Whether you are an established bowler moving to our area, an outdoor bowler looking for an indoor club for the winter or someone completely new to the sport of bowls come along and give our club a try. We are sure that you will not be disappointed.
